Frequently Asked Questions

What are the goals of WILD?

At the start of the semester, WILD's instructors will facilitate the establishment of individual and group goals. Our personal goal is for each student to successfully achieve certification in each of the six core elements of the WILD program and that our students develop into dynamic leaders specializing in whitewater. We strongly believe that the technical and "soft" skills acquired over the semester will make each student a valuable asset to any company operating wilderness/whitewater expeditions.

How long has the WILD program been in existence?

WILD is in it's 9th year of providing world class instruction for whitewater enthusiasts! Although WILD, as a semester based leadership training program, is relatively new, the six core elements themselves have existed for years as established courses offered
individually by recognized training institutions such as Esprit, Rescue 3 International, SOLO, Whitewater Ontario (WO), and ORCA. This is the first time, however, that these 6 core elements have been offered in a combined training program which emphasizes not only training but practice, experience and judgment. To the best of our knowledge it is the most specialized whitewater training program in the world!

Do I need experience to join WILD?

Whitewater experience is not a requirement to join the WILD program. Our excellent instructors will take you through the basics and beyond of each of the six core elements. If you are in average shape, have a keen sense of adventure, possess a desire to learn, love the outdoors and are comfortable in water then you have everything it takes to participate in the WILD program.

How many students will be on the course?

The WILD program is open to both men and women. The maximum course size is 20 students.

Is there a minimum age?

Due to the certification requirements of certain core elements, the WILD program has a minimum age of 18 years.

What is the accommodation like?

WILD students will be provided with shared tenting accommodation in wooden platform tents. Students should bring their own linens, sleeping bag, sleeping pad/mattress and pillows. All other camping equipment will be provided by WILD. While on the road, tents will be provided by WILD. In Jalcomulco, students will be divided into pairs and placed with a local host family.

What if I am in need of a special diet?

No problem! Vegetarians, Vegans and special diets are all welcome. Just let us know what you need and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Will I be able to apply what I learn from WILD in the "real" world?

The national and international certifications that you will gain, upon completion of the WILD program, will make you an invaluable asset to any outdoor adventure company. You will have the necessary skills and experience to lead outdoor adventure programs for companies in both Canada and around the world. The leadership skills gained throughout the 90 days will be an asset to you no matter what career you end up following.

Do I need a passport?

WILD students must have all necessary travel documents and a valid passport to enter Canada, the United States and Mexico prior to the commencement of the course. It is also recommended that all students should carry a copy of their birth certificate and two additional pieces of identification in case of emergencies.
