The Elements
The WILD program involves the six core whitewater elements of kayaking, paddle raft guiding, canoeing, riverboarding, river rescue and wilderness first aid. Students will gain national and international certification from Rescue 3 International, Wilderness Medical Associates, the Canadian Rivers Council, the Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association (ORCA), the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association (CRCA) and Whitewater Ontario (WO).
The Classroom:
WILD uses the great outdoors as its classroom and rivers as its medium of discovery. From our base in Canada, the program moves throughout Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec to the rivers of New York State, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. The program continues to our Mexico base in the state of Veracruz and finishes in Oaxaca as we paddle into the Pacific Ocean. The rivers provide endless challenges and rewards, ensuring competency and instilling confidence. The students not only learn valuable river skills, they also learn about fragile ecosystems, responsible tourism, risk management, leadership, group dynamics and themselves. Students will gain a lasting appreciation for the rivers, the environment, the people and the cultures they interact with.
The Skills:
WILD provides the instruction, the tools, the freedom to practice outside of formal training days and the ability to apply the skills you learn on commercial trips during supervised practice. Meal planning, trip logistics, route planning, dynamic leadership, outdoor cooking, equipment rigging, environmental awareness… the skills you gain are as abundant as your desire to learn!
The Safety:
Whitewater training entails a high element of risk. At WILD our educators are internationally certified, recognized leaders, in Swiftwater Rescue and Wilderness First Aid. WILD emphasizes respect for the river and the powers of nature. Students are closely supervised and are instilled with the doctrine to make safety their first priority.
|
Leadership:
Leadership is a practical skill which students can apply throughout their daily lives. Team building, problem solving, conflict resolution, confidence, responsibility, judgment, communication and group motivation are skills developed within the river environment and will last a lifetime.
The Instruction:
Dynamic educators with extensive international whitewater experience, small course sizes providing an excellent instructor to student ratio and WILD's international classroom is the hallmark of the WILD program. Instruction is "hands-on" and personal, giving students the opportunity to learn while "doing".
Fun:
The WILD program will bring together individuals who share common interests. Whitewater has a unique and powerful way of binding people together. It is exciting, challenging and fun! Students will find that the friendships and camaraderie developed over the duration of the course will last a lifetime.
